About SBS D Forum
The SBS D Forum is a corporate social responsibility initiative and non-profit knowledge-sharing project of SBS. As part of efforts by SBS to give back to society in its capacity as a public broadcaster, the SBS D Forum builds on the rich traditions of the Seoul Digital Forum (SDF) and Future Korea Report (FKR). Launched in 2004, SDF and FKR served as important platforms for exploring the technology-driven transformation of our world, as well as mid-to-long term issues with important implications for Korea’s future. Yet with problems pertaining to technology and society becoming increasingly inextricable, SBS recognized the need for a new approach. The SBS D Forum, to be held for the first time this year, marks the start of a new chapter for SDF, offering a platform for exploring pressing social issues from diverse perspectives. These perspectives can be encapsulated in numerous Ds: Diversity, Democracy, Data, and Dream, etc. After topics are selected at the beginning of each year, related interviews, campaigns, and other projects will be organized year-round, culminating in the year-end offline forum, where we will come together to seek greater insight on the topics at hand.

Changing the World
During Korea’s “candlelight revolution,” ordinary Korean people rallied together to protest corruption in the political system and ultimately brought about the impeachment of the sitting president. The #MeToo and #WithYou movements shed light on sexual violence perpetrated by those in power, and survivors and their supporters, first in the United States and now around the world, continue to make their voices heard. The student-led anti-gun campaign in the United States saw young people take collective action in the wake of successive school shootings, leading to the passage of tougher gun control legislation. More recently in Korea, accounts have continued to emerge of how skewed power dynamics have enabled gross abuses of the privileges associated with authority, wealth, and status. All around, problems long suppressed or left unquestioned are rising to the surface. Voices calling for change have been joined by voices expressing support and solidarity. Together, they are challenging practices and norms that have persistently undermined justice, equality, and human rights in Korean society, and that always seemed too deeply rooted to ever change.
In today’s “free-for-all” world of worsening economic polarization and defunct social safety nets, simply surviving has becoming a struggle. Yet in the face of such mounting pressures and challenges, there is a growing recognition that the issues that affect us as individuals affect us as a society, and that speaking up is not a luxury but a necessity. Against this backdrop, social media and new forms of media technology are providing a platform for people in different regions and communities to tell and spread their stories and come together in mutual support.
Under the theme “A New Common Sense: Individuals Changing the World,” the SBS D Forum 2018 will examine the substance of the “new common sense” taking shape amid the disintegration of entrenched practices and ways of thinking and explore how individuals empowered in their connection to one another are ushering in real, tangible change. Moreover, it will consider what kinds of policies, technologies, and social systems are necessary to ensure that such changes do not end as one-off developments but rather become the impetus for genuine transformation, as well as what measures can be taken to address and overcome the accompanying challenges.

SDF Invitation
Organized annually since 2004, the Seoul Digital Forum (SDF) and Future Korea Report (FKR) are recognized today as the signature corporate social responsibility initiatives of SBS. Over the years, SDF and FKR have served as important non-profit forums for considering the technology-driven transformations shaping our world and their ramifications for Korea’s mid- to long-term future. This year, on the 28th anniversary of the founding of SBS, we are pleased to launch SBS D Forum (SDF), an all-new forum that merges and builds on the rich traditions of SDF and FKR.
The SBS D Forum will provide an in-depth exploration of major issues of social relevance, all of which can be encapsulated in the letter D: Diversity, Democracy, Data, and Dream, etc. as well as Discussion on potential solutions and Directions for growth.
The theme of SDF2018 is “New Common Sense: Individuals Changing the World.”
New light has been shed in recent months on the power imbalances that afflict our societies, on the back of a spreading momentum generated by the #MeToo movement that began in Hollywood. This movement has spread to Korea as well, where people have come forward to expose the unjust and unfair practices rooted in Korean society. Together, these voices have emerged as a united cry for a reexamination and reworking of the fundamental paradigms that underlie our social order.
At a time when ordinary individuals have become a dynamic force for transformation, and the demand is growing for the forging of a new common sense, the SBS D Forum will draw on the research efforts of experts to identify and analyze the changes affecting civil society and their causes. The forum will also invite individuals who have helped usher in these changes to share their stories firsthand.
