New York Times best-selling author of iWOZ and The Genomics Age
Gina Smith is one of the best-known journalists covering tech and science in America today.
She penned the New York Times best-seller, iWOZ, a biography of Apple inventor and founder Steve Wozniak. In 2004, her book, The Genomics Age, was a Barron's book of the year. The Genomics Age explained the science and ramifications of decoding the human genome in terms the public could easily grasp.
Smith is an award-winning reporter for her newspaper, magazine, radio and television work. In the 1990s, she was on-air in the U.S. as the world's first "technology correspondent," covering tech news and science trends for ABC News, a national network. There, she appeared several times weekly on Good Morning America, World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and 20/20 with Ted Koppel.
Smith's radio show - a five-hour talk show where she fielded questions from computer users - aired from 1992 to 2000. On Computers with Gina Smith reached more than 1 million globally through U.S. stations and the American Armed Forces Radio Network. The Computer Press Association awarded her show first place in the radio category in 1996.
Smith's newspaper column, Inside Silicon Valley, appeared every Sunday in the San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner Sunday edition from 1992 to 2000. It won multiple awards - among them, first prize for investigative journalism from the Computer Press Association. Her syndicated column, Ask Gina, was seen by more than 5 million Sunday newspapers weekly.
Smith is widely published. She has written for publications as diverse as The Los Angeles Times and Wired, and her columns appeared monthly in both Glamour and Popular Science.
Smith has received numerous awards and honors, among them an appointment to the Board of Councillors for the University of Southern California's School of Engineering. From 2000 to 2003, Smith served as CEO for billionaire Larry Ellison's New Internet Computer (NIC) company. She has since been continuing her writing and finishing her doctorate in clinical psychology.
Smith lives with her husband and 5-year-old son in San Francisco.
