Jay Samit Jay Samit

Executive Vice President, Sony Corporation of America / General Manager, Sony Connect

A 25 year digital media veteran, Jay Alan Samit has held senior management positions at Sony, EMI, and Universal Studios with the responsibility for the development of new digital media businesses. Samit broke new ground with his forays into wireless, ringtones, streaming radio, secure P2P and subscription business models. Samit championed digital download initiatives, and created global policies that combated piracy and enabled artists to make significant gains in the online music space. Samit's aggressive move into mobile and the digital distribution of music made digital distribution into a leading profit center for his companies – including generating over $100 million in profit in just one year. Active in the developer community, Samit nurtures start-up companies and helps take them public in markets around the globe. Working with artists and managers to develop new sustainable revenue streams, along with his role as one of the leading authorities on new media, garnered Samit the Gavin Label Executive of the Year in 2000.

Prior to joining corporate America, Samit founded Jasmine Multimedia Publishing. During his leadership, the company created more than 300 software titles, and developed key advances in music and video technologies for Microsoft, Apple, Intel, and IBM. He and his products received numerous awards, including Best of Show Comdex; Best of RetailVision; Best of E3; Multimedia Producer Top 100; and the Newsweek Editor's Choice Award.

Committed to giving back to the community, Samit was invited by President Clinton to lead the White House's Initiative for Education & Technology, and spearheaded the effort to create Internet access for America's schools. Samit's collaboration with the White House spurred the creation of the National Education Technology Initiative (NETI). Samit also served as director of this non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of providing "universal access" to the Internet for America's youth. Samit's other charity work ranges from the first Internet Charity Auction to Tsunami Aid (with NBC) and the Concert for Hurricane Relief (with MTV).

Samit sits on the board of several companies and is on the board of the University of Southern California's Stevens Institute of Innovation. He is a member of the Writer's Guild of America and a performing member of the Magic Castle. A recipient of the Presidential Fellowship, Samit graduated magna cum laude from UCLA.
