Un-Chan Chung

Born in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, Professor Un-Chan Chung is currently a faculty member in the School of Economics at Seoul National University, of which he served as the 23rd president from 2002 to 2006.
After graduating from what is now the School of Economics at Seoul National University in 1970, Professor Chung obtained a master’s degree in economics at Miami University and a doctoral degree in economics at Princeton University. As a business associate and assistant professor, he taught “Money and Financial Markets” for 3 years at Columbia University, starting in 1976. Since late 1978, he has served as a professor in the School of Economics at his alma mater. As a visiting professor or scholar, he has lectured and conducted research at the University of Hawaii, London School of Economics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany), Princeton University, and University of Washington. In addition, he has held posts including the president of the Korea Money and Finance Association, president of the Korean Economic Association, director of the Korea Council of Economic and Social Research Institutes in the Prime Minister’s Office, and chairman of the Financial Development Committee in the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
Currently, Professor Chung is a member of the President’s Council at the University of Tokyo, president of the Korean Social Science Research Council, and director of the Institute for Research in Finance and Economics at Seoul National University. His has authored numerous works including the Unfinished Journey of Korean Economy, Korean Economy’s Struggle to Survive, Korean Economy in Challenges (collaboration), A Treatise on Financial Reform, Macroeconomics (collaboration), Principles of Economics (collaboration), and Money and Financial Markets (collaboration).
