Yeon-Sun Joo
Cello Principal, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra
Korean born cellist Joo, YeonSun has enjoyed a successful career as a concert soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician. Currently, Ms. Joo serves as the associate principal cellist of the Kansas City Symphony, a post she has held since 2005. As a soloist Ms. Joo has performed with numerous orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the KBS (the Korean National Broadcasting System) Orchestra, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic, the World Symphony, and the Shepherd Symphony Orchestra.
As a recitalist and chamber musician, Ms. Joo has appeared in concert halls such as the Seoul KumHo Recital Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Lincoln Center and the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. In great demand as a chamber musician, Ms. Joo has collaborated with world renowned artists as Robert Diaz, Kim Kashkashian, Elmar Olivieira, Itzhak Perlman, Lorin Maazel, KyungSun Lee, and Cho-Liang Lin.
She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including first prizes in the Sorantin International Competition, Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra Competition, Greenfield Competition, Hankook Ilbo Contest, and Seikae Ilbo Competitions.
After graduating at the Seoul Arts High School under Myung-Wha Chung, she went on to receive her bachelor's degree at the Curtis Institute of Music under Orlando Cole and her Master's degree under Lynn Harrell at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. She has also participated in masterclasses with Arto Noras, Gary Hoffmann, Lawrence Lesser, and Mstislav Rostropovich.
