Do-Soung Choi Do-Soung Choi

Member, Monetary Policy Committee, Bank of Korea

Choi Dosoung has been a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Korea since April 2008. He was formerly Professor of Finance at Seoul National University. He also served as President of the Korea Securities Research Institute (KSRI) from 2005 to 2008.

Choi received a B.A. degree in business administration in 1974 and an MBA degree in 1976 both from Seoul National University. He began his professional career at the Bank of Korea, where he worked for two years before leaving to study at Pennsylvania State University, obtaining a Ph.D. in finance in 1980. Before joining Seoul National University in 1994, he enjoyed a distinguished 14-year academic career teaching at the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University of Tennessee, and Pennsylvania State University. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago in 1984.

Choi was Commissioner of the Securities and Futures Commission from 2001 to 2004. He served as President of two academic associations: Korea Finance Association in 2006 and Korea Securities Association in 2000. He is a member of the Korean Institute of Certified Public Accountant (KICPA). Over the past few years, he has served as an outside director for the Korea Exchange and Woori Financial Holdings, among others.

He has published numerous articles in such fields as corporate finance, the market for corporate control, and capital markets in a number of prestigious journals, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. He has also authored a number of books on capital markets, M&As, corporate bankruptcies and reorganizations, financial derivatives and risk management, and corporate finance.
