Chang-Gyu Hwang Chang-Gyu Hwang

Hwang Chang-Gyu is currently the Secretary-General of the Office of Strategic R&D Planning at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy in Korea. He received a BS and MS in electrical engineering from Seoul National University and earned a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts.

After working at Intel and as a research associate at Stanford University, he joined Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in 1989. Hwang oversaw the development of the world's first 256Mb DRAM in 1994 and the world's first NAND Flash in 1999. He contributed to the creation of new markets for the semiconductor industry in mobile and consumer electronics, and in 2004, he was named President & CEO of Semiconductor Business. From 2008 to 2009, Hwang served as the Chief Technology Officer of Samsung Electronics Co. In April 2010, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Office of R&D Planning after serving as an advisor to Samsung Electronics, counseling on the research and development of Samsung Electronics' future technologies.

Since 2002, he has been actively serving the Electron Device Society and the Circuit and System Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) as an IEEE Fellow. Distinguished awards include the ISI Citation Classic Award(2000), ISSCC Takuo Sugano Outstanding Paper Award(2002), Technology Leadership and Innovations Award from the Electronic Industries Alliance(2004), Best Scientist Award from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies(2006) and the Andy Grove Award(2006). He was also named one of the 25 Stars of Asia by Business Week(2003) and one of the Ten Big Thinkers by Newsweek(2005).
