T. V. Raman

T. V. Raman is a research scientist at Google with more than 16 years of industry experience in advanced technology development. Raman has been blind since the age of 14, when he suffered from glaucoma. One of his research interests is creating highly efficient eyes-free interfaces that can be used in a variety of eyes-busy situations.
He has authored three books and filed over 50 patents. His work on eyes-free interaction and auditory interfaces has been profiled in various leading publications including The New York Times (January 2009) and Scientific American (September 1996). He is a leading expert in the design of eyes-free mobile interfaces, auditory interaction, and web standards. In addition, he participates in numerous W3C working groups and authored Aural CSS (ACSS). He has served as an elected member of the W3C’s Technical Architecture Group (TAG) since 2006.
Raman received his BA in mathematics from the University of Pune, an MSc in computer science from the India Institute of Technology, and an MS in computer science and a PhD in applied mathematics from Cornell University. His PhD thesis entitled “Audio System For Technical Readings (AsTeR)” was awarded the ACM Dissertation Award in 1994.
