From sushi makers, house-chore helpers to caregivers for autistic children, robots have taken up various and intimate roles in our everyday lives.
With robotic avatars or tele-operated robots expected to be used more frequently in more diverse situations, roboticists are imagining more natural and effective ways to communicate and interact with machines. Hiroshi Ishiguro, a renowned Japanese roboticist known for his lifelike "androids" and various tele-operated robots, including the "elfoid," stresses the importance of the cognitive aspect of human-robot interaction.
He illustrates his quest for human-friendly robots that can help bridge the gap between humans and robots, and ultimately the one between ourselves.
