Redefining ‘Intelligence’ :
What Can We Expect from Artificial Intelligence?
60 years ago the legendary computer scientist John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence [AI]”, defining it as ‘the science and engineering of making intelligent machines’. The field of AI has since made major strides, making it a key part of many of today’s applications ranging from robotics and electronics to customer service and healthcare. Is this increasing prevalence of AI something we should be cautious about or delve into? Bringing together three brilliant scientists – Miguel Nicolelis, Rosalind Picard and Francisco Vico - this session invites us to rethink what it means for machines to be ‘intelligent’ and how we can make our technology not simply more powerful, but more meaningful for the people who will live with it.
