Myung-Hoon Bae
Science Fiction Writer
Bae Myung Hoon is one of a rare breed in Korea’s literary scene, a writer of science fiction. While studying war at Seoul National University, he won the Science and Technology Creative Writing Award in 2005, which launched his career as a science fiction writer. Working full time at the Future Strategy Center of the Korea Information Society Development Institute, a government-affiliated research body of ICT policy, Bae continued to publish short stories through Fantastique, a literary magazine specializing in genre fiction.
In 2009, Bae became better known among the literary circle and also to the general readership with a short story omnibus, Tower, about a 674-story skyscraper that tells the story of politics and society. He has been writing full time since.
Bae won the Munhakdongne New Writer Award in 2010 for his short story collection, Hello, The Artificial Being! He has written 10 books, including the most recent about life at a space colony, Chutsum [The First Breath].
His works touch upon how technological advancements transform human civilization, as told through a writer’s perspective ranging from social, political, and art.
