KANG Won Taek is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University. He previously served as a professor in the department and as Director of the Institute for Future Strategy at Seoul National University before retiring in August 2026.

He served as President of the Korean Political Science Association in 2016 and President of the Korean Association of Party Studies in 2010. He has also served on advisory committees for institutions including the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of National Defense. He currently chairs the Policy Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and serves as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Constitutional Court of Korea.

His academic interests include Korean politics, elections, political parties, legislatures, political and institutional reform, and the history of Korean politics.

He is the author of numerous books, including The Birth of a Nation: The Origins of the Republic of Korea Through the Constituent National Assembly, A Country That Experienced Democracy on the Brink, The Fifth Republic, How Conservatives Survived: 300 Years of the British Conservative Party, from Decline to Revival, Defining Moments in Korean Politics and Korean Democracy After Unification.
