Title In the Age of Autonomy, Who Holds the Stick?
-What AI Pilots and Unmanned Aircraft Technologies Mean for Cognitive Sovereignty

LIM Sungshin is an expert in aviation AI and autonomous flight who has led the development of avionics software and artificial intelligence technologies in the aerospace and defense sector for nearly two decades. Since joining Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI), Korea’s leading aerospace and defense company, in 2007, he has spearheaded a wide range of aviation software projects, including Operational Flight Programs (OFPs) for fighter aircraft, integrated avionics test environments, mission software, and machine learning-based algorithms for weapon systems.

He currently oversees the development of AI pilots and autonomous flight technologies for future aerial platforms, including fighter aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems and next-generation mission autonomy architectures. His work focuses particularly on reliability, safety, and AI certification technologies required to deploy artificial intelligence in operational aircraft. He is also working to establish a technological framework that enables future aerial weapon systems to evolve continuously through software and AI.

In addition, he is leading KAI’s company-wide AI transformation (AX), applying generative AI and large language models (LLMs) not only to aircraft design and development but also across manufacturing and business operations.
