Title How to build AI agents that enhance human autonomy

Philipp Koralus is the inaugural McCord Professor of Philosophy and AI at the University of Oxford, where he is founding Director of the Human-Centered AI Lab (HAI Lab).

He is the architect of the erotetic theory of reason and decision-making, a unified account of how human minds, as well as AI systems trained on them, reason their way to conclusions and choices. The theory holds that reason aims at resolving issues by answering questions as directly as possible, while weakly seeking what he has called erotetic equilibrium.

This single principle explains our two-faced nature: on the one hand the systematic fallacies and framing effects documented in psychology and behavioural economics, and on the other our remarkable capacity for the feats of rationality required by science, philosophy, and economic agency. Koralus lays out the theory in full in his book Reason and Inquiry: The Erotetic Theory (Oxford University Press, 2023).

His work is now focused on harnessing the erotetic theory to solve one of the central problems posed by the age of AI: how artificial minds can augment ours without compromising our autonomy of judgment.
