Hiroshi Ishiguro received a PhD in systems engineering from Osaka University, Japan in 1991. He is currently a professor of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University (2009–) and Group Leader (2011–) of the Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute (ATR).
He has published more than 300 papers in major journals and conferences, such as Robotics Research and IEEE PAMI. His research interests include distributed sensor systems, interactive robotics and android science. In the last several years, he has focused mainly on the development of humanoids and androids. His robots have been featured extensively in major media, such as the Discovery Channel, NHK, and BBC.
He received the Best Humanoid Award four times in RoboCup. Synectics Survey of Contemporary Genius 2007 named him one of the top 100 geniuses alive in the world today. In 2011, he was listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists to Watch by Asian Scientist Magazine. Every year he receives over US$2 million in funding for developing robots from the Japanese government and private companies.
