Beyond the Crisis

Date : 2009. 11. 05
Location : Dynasty Hall, The Shilla Seoul

More than a year has passed since the eruption of global financial crisis. Worldwide recession caused by financial crisis has changed Korea’s economic environment profoundly.

Industrial boundaries have broken down and uncertainty has soared. The government’s role in providing a vision to steer us out of the crisis has taken on particular prominence. As the U.S. consumption that paced global economic growth plunged, global market power seems to be shifting towards China and other emerging markets.

Such drastic changes demand the fundamental reform of the Korean economy. Korean economy has been recording low growth recently. GDP per capita, once over US$20,000, has plummeted below that mark last year. Many recently released competitiveness indicators show Korea’s economic competitiveness weakening. As we strive to bounce back from the crisis, we believe that this is the time to talk about economic fundamentals once again.

Under the theme of Beyond the Crisis, this year’s Future Korea Report will scrutinize the causes that have obstructed growth and provide visions and suggestions to improve our competitiveness. We shall also try to look into the issue of social safety-net that must be established along the way.

Since the Future Korea Report’s inception in 2004, SBS has addressed the topics of Aging, Jobs, Education, Happiness, Leadership and Climate Change in order to tackle and envision solutions to long-term agenda for our society.

Please join us in creating a jolt of momentum to get the Korean economy soaring again at the 7th Future Korea Report.
